Description

On the market for the first time since 1964, this one level expanded Goodman contemporary offers so much potential for the next owners. Featured in the 1967 edition of Better Homes and Gardens, the home has four to five bedrooms, one and a half baths, and an addition designed by noted architect, Eason Cross, which adds a breezeway entrance and a separate bedroom wing. Multiple bonus rooms allow for flexible living space and the opportunity to make the home uniquely yours. Original details include beautiful parquet wood floors and wood-burning fireplace. The house is thoughtfully sited on a corner lot which creates wooded vistas from every room through walls of windows. The exterior includes two sheds, natural landscaping and offers great curb appeal. This home is being sold “as-is,” but has been well-maintained through the years.

The historic community of Hollin Hills is comprised of approximately 450 mid-century modern homes designed and built by architect Charles Goodman and developer Robert Davenport. The homes are characterized by their large private wooded lots, sleek lines, and blending of interior and exterior vistas with their distinctive walls of windows. This close-knit community offers something for everyone from a book club to babysitting cooperatives to the Hollin Hills Orchid Society. Annual events such as the Fall potluck, the 4th of July picnic, Holiday caroling, and the bi-annual Hollin Hills House and Garden Tour bring together young and old alike and help to make this such a special place to live. The neighborhood was added to the National Register of Historic Places in September 2013. This provides formal recognition of the historic architecture and community planning of Goodman and Davenport and identifies nearly 475 contributing historic structures, including this house.

Hollin Hills is a neighborhood with covenants that govern your property. Any exterior modifications of your home will require approval from the Design Review Committee. For more information and copies of the covenants and DRC Guidelines, check out www.hollinhills.net.

Alexandria - Route 1 Corridor

One doesn’t usually think of a bustling corridor of shops, businesses and residences as home to an airfield, but Beacon Hill in the heart of the Route 1 Corridor was just that in the early days of aviation.  Thousands of pilots were trained there prior to World War II and it remained an airfield until the late 1950’s.  After the war and before the creation of the Interstate Highway System, Route 1 was the major north-south highway from Florida to Maine, and this community was home to scores of motels, shops and restaurants to serve travelers.  A handful of those old motels are still around, but most have given way to housing developments, commercial and retail centers over the last 30 years.  Tucked between the George Washington Parkway to the east and I-95 to the west, the Route 1 Corridor still handles a lot of cars every day as a major commuting artery, but now has a more distinctly suburban feel than even 20 years ago.

Quality of Life:

At almost 1,500 acres, Huntley Meadows Park is a green escape in a very busy suburban community.  Home to some of the largest and most pristine wetland areas in Fairfax County, Huntley Meadows is a real jewel.  Every type of housing in every price range can be found in the Route 1 Corridor, and there’s plenty of “big box” retail and restaurants to support this evolving community.  INOVA Mt. Vernon Hospital offers quality care to the community’s residents, and has a particularly strong reputation for orthopedic surgery and rehabilitation.  There’s also a long-established farmer’s market every Saturday morning (in season, of course) in the shadow of the Hospital at Fairfax County’s Mt. Vernon District offices.

Getting Around:

The car is king, but there are multiple bus routes offering access throughout the region as well as feeding to the Huntington Metro, the beginning of the Yellow Line.  Route 1 runs north-south right through the middle of the community, serving as the area’s travel backbone.

Airports:

Ronald Reagan National Airport:  < 10 miles
Washington-Dulles International Airport:  < 38 miles
Baltimore-Washington International Airport:  < 47 miles
